Session 11 - A New Level of Life

×

Here we need to understand that education is the main thing needed to reach a decision to change and to implement the decision. Seeing things as we described in earlier sessions, resolving to relate to others in the ways that this course has been explaining, and working on this resolution within ourselves, requires a lot of work. And yet, it is the most important work there is. Now that the whole of humanity is entering this new era, we will have to make this adjustment on ourselves and become not only truly human but humane.

Being humane means that we are all parts of the human species, which is really a single entity (like a super organism) of which we are all parts. We hope that as integral education evolves, each of us will be able to see Nature's proofs that we are all interconnected together as one. Scientific research, life itself, and our development all point to our duty to make this needed correction. If all are convinced to join and participate in the needed integral education, the new knowledge acquired will help everyone change, so we may arrive at a better world.

Currently, we are at the threshold of this beautiful new world. The beauty of it is experienced as soon as one begins to connect with others, since then s/he begins to feel the new world and all of life, through the others. It is similar to what happens when I love my child, I seemingly experience life along with him. It is as if I am with him at school, with friends, and everywhere he goes. I enjoy what he enjoys and feel what he feels, and I think about him all the time.

Similarly, in the moment that I begin to connect to the entire world,  I begin to receive an impression from the entire world, and suddenly that knowledge and that feeling reaches me, that is in every human in the world. I will suddenly feel and know what all the people in the world know. Thus I can expand my life so much so, that I no longer live within me, but within all,  and I'll stop living inside my self, and will begin to live in everyone else. And at that point, I'll be able to touch the eternal point within me, to the extent that I am are integrated in everyone else, in the system of mutual guarantee.

Topic

When we feel everyone in a system of mutual guarantee, we reach a new level of life—a life outside the corporeal level.

Main Points

  • Education is the key; it will gradually bring a change in the relationship to others.
  • Through the news and through various activities in society, integral education will be warmly accepted and we will discover that all of us are parts of one person, all of us together are "human."

"Symbiosis, the "living together of differently named organisms" is far more important in the evolution of life and the functioning of organisms and ecologies than the competition-centric views of Darwin's early defenders asserted, and may be the key driving force in the evolution of life on earth."

Summary of: Darwin's "Blind Spot: Evolution Beyond Natural Selection"

"Actually, there are more than two ways of looking at natural selection, and Holistic Darwinism focusses not on genes, or individuals, or even groups as units of selection but on the functional relationships among the "units" at various levels of biological organization, from genomes to ecosystems, and on their consequences for differential survival and reproduction."

"Thoughts and feelings affect each other..." there is a false division between thinking and feeling."

"This is another major feature of thought: thought doesn't know it is doing something and then it struggles against what it is doing.  It doesn't want to know that it is doing it."

Thought can generate incoherence and thought can also generate habits and habitual behaviour.  Bohm saw thought as a system, a set of connected things or parts.

He said, "thought is a system.  That system not only includes thoughts, 'felts' and feelings, but it includes the state of the body; it includes the whole of society - as thought is passing back and forth between people in a process by which thought evolved from ancient times.""

A review of the Book: Thought as a System

"As a society, we have to learn better how to learn – I call it social learning; it is the dynamism for change that could lead us to a new kind of society that will not destroy itself from its own excesses… for we must share a vision for a new society before we can realize it. Designing a better society and maintaining a good life require deep thought and sustained effort by all of us. Reasoning together is the only way we can bring it about."

Lester W. Milbrath (1989) notes in his book, Envisioning a Sustainable Society: Learning Our Way Out

Question 1: According to the text of the lesson, what is discovered with the help of integral education?

Question 2: A starling is a common songbird.  Even though alone, this songbird has no particular grace or exceptional characteristics, everyday, a little before dark, when thousands of starlings gather together for a last flight before sleep, something incomprehensible happens.

Join us for a breathtaking short journey to the open expanses of southern England to see together the magical phenomenon of the flock of starlings. [link to video here, if needed.]

a. Nature gives us many examples of connectedness, harmony, and balance within all of its parts. Knowing that we are a part of nature, how did this example make you feel?

b. In the transcript text for this session the good relationship and connection between people was described with the following words:

"In the moment that I begin to connect to the entire world,  I begin to receive an impression from the entire world, and suddenly that knowledge and that feeling reaches me, that is in every human in the world. I will suddenly feel and know what all the people in the world know. Thus I can expand my life so much so, that I no longer live within me, but within all,  and I'll stop living inside my self, and will begin to live in everyone else."

In your opinion, what will a person benefit if he begins to connect to others, specifically in regards to the fact that "he will not be in himself, but within all."?
