Session 8 - The Future Depends on the Environment


A person's future depends solely on one's choice of one's environment—on building it. It's especially so today, since we have reached a point where we are all completely interdependent, and globally and integrally connected. We see the extent to which people all over the world determine each other's futures. If some country, even if it is geographically distant, starts to act defensively or mistreats another country, it changes my own life, locally. I have to take measures against this adverse influence, and take better care of myself and of others.

We need to understand that that mutual dependence necessitates our building and designing a global education for everyone. In that education, we must first teach ourselves and others that in the end, our future depends entirely on the environment.

The whole world has reached a state of codependency, therefore, an integral educational system needs to be created that will teach humanity about this dependency on the environment.

Question 5: We became familiar with the book “Connected” and its writers Professor Nicholas A. Christakis and Professor James H. Fowler in the first study unit. Within the book, the idea of mutual dependence is emphasized and brought forward in these words:

“How we feel, what we know, who we marry, when we will get sick, how much money we make, and will we vote – it all depends on the connections which bind us. Through social networks happiness spreads generosity and love. They are always there, putting gentle as well as dramatic influence on our choices, our actions, thoughts, emotions and even our desires. Our connections don’t end with the people we know. Beyond our social horizons, friends of friends of friends can begin chain reactions which will eventually reach us, like waves from distant countries which reach our shores.”

b. Have you ever felt dependence on something or someone? If you don’t think the above excerpt describes codependence, is codependence a term that you have felt during your lifetime? Describe in your own words what codependence is:

Two parents have a son that is sick for a few days.

a. How does this affect their behavior, their mood, and their thoughts?

b. The moment the child’s situation begins to improve, what happens to the parents?
